Models disagree on Atlantic storm track, meaning weekend storm now unlikely

Monday, January 12, 2015, 2:45 PM - After an early indication that Atlantic Canada might see a winter storm starting Friday and extending through the weekend, updated models show the storm track remaining out over the ocean.

On Sunday, various models showed landfall for a potential storm, but Monday's models tend to agree that the track of the storm will stay out over the ocean and not impact Atlantic Canada.

"Only one model really showed that potential yesterday, and that model has since joined the majority in keeping the significant impacts offshore," said Doug Gilham, Weather Network meteorologist. "We will continue to monitor the storm track, as a path further to the west and north could have an impact on the Avalon, but at this point it is unlikely that Atlantic Canada will see significant precipitation at the end of the week."

A system is expected to push into the region today from Ontario, and will be predominantly a snow event for most of Nova Scotia, while some will see a transition to a rain/snow mix. Snow amounts are generally less than 10 cm for most cities, with Charlottetown and St. John's likely seeing close to that cap. Winds are not a huge concern, however, they will certainly contribute to some blowing snow conditions with periods of reduced visibility along the roads.
