Sunday, December 6, 2015, 10:46 AM - A strong system, called Storm Desmond by European forecasters, has pummeled the British Isles, leaving major flooding in its wake.
The UK Met Office has more than 100 flood warnings in effect across Scotland and the north of England, with rivers bursting banks and flooding towns between Sunday and when the storm began intensifying Friday.
"The rainfall experienced in many parts of the north west of the UK is thought to have been exceptional and early provisional rainfall statistics indicate many places have seen totals widely over 180 to 200 mm in the Lake District," the Met Office says. "It is thought very locally event totals may be in excess of 300 mm locally."
The Telegraph reports around 60,000 homes and businesses are without power, and hundreds of people have been evacuated, some with army assistance. At least one person has died: A 90-year-old man whom the BBC says may have been blown in front of a bus by the storm's strong winds.
Here's what the flooding looks like in the worst-hit areas.
