Technicolour lobsters lead to local lineups at supermarket

Tuesday, May 15, 2018, 7:03 PM - It's been a colourful start to the lobster season in Pictou, N.S. For proof look no farther that the local Sobeys, which has been home to a streak of extremely rare technicolour crustaceans.

"This is really rare actually, we've had a lot of people come in to view the lobsters," Sobeys seafood department employee Trent Maclean told The Weather Network.

It all started on May 1 when the grocery store received an albino lobster.

"The next day we received a blue lobster, which since has gone to the fisheries museum," said Maclean. "It's pretty neat."

Another blue lobster arrived on May 12, and two days later to Maclean's surprise, a calico crustacean was brought in.

"It was quite a shock to see it, it was a surprise," said fisherman Randal Heighton who caught one of the blue lobsters. "This is the first one for me and I have been fishing for nine or 10 years."

According to the Lobster Institute at the University of Maine, the odds of catching a blue lobster is one in 2 million.

The chances of catching a calico lobster is one in 30 million, and for an albino one in 100 million.

The lobsters are on loan from the fishermen and are not for sale. However, their fate is uncertain.

"Somebody might get to eat him I guess," said Heighton as he was holding his prize. "They turn red in the pot as well, so it looks the same after you cook it."
