Monday, February 2, 2015, 1:12 PM - What began as a simple act of kindness in Halifax has captured the attention of thousands of people on social media.

A photo of Sobey's employee Austin MacNeill escorting an elderly blind woman home from the grocery store has gone viral.

It was taken by a passerby named Terri Bordage Stevens, and has received more than 15,000 likes and nearly 6,000 shares on her personal Facebook page.

Despite the reaction from the public and the media, 72-year-old Mary Cogswell was not surprised by MacNeill's offer to walk her home amid icy sidewalks and chilly temperatures.

She said that employees have been helping her get home with her groceries for years, regardless of the season or weather.

Stevens' photo was accompanied by this message on her Facebook page:

"Big shout out to whoever this employee is. I was driving in Halifax by Sobeys [sic] Queen Street and made my friend slow down so I could snap this wonderful picture. An Employee was helping an elderly lady home as the sidewalks are very icy letting her hold his arm and carry her groceries. Now that's putting your customers first. Please thank him for being a great employee."
