SEE IT: Bizarre orange snow blankets eastern Europe

Monday, March 26, 2018, 2:14 PM - The hills of Sochi, Russia were blanketed with orange snow over the weekend, leaving skiers and snowboarders baffled.

The reason?

A recent sandstorm in North Africa blew snow across the Sahara Desert, and into eastern Europe. Sand was deposited across Greece and into Russia during a storm that was large enough to be picked up by NASA satellites.

Experts say it was one of the largest transfers of Sahara sand to Greece on record, according to CNN.

One social media user said the orange-tinted snow made it feel like they were "skiing on Mars."

While it made for a once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunity, skiers say sand in the atmosphere contributed to reduced visibility on the slopes.
