A country of two seasons: Ontario snow vs. Alberta warmth

Wednesday, October 17, 2018, 3:05 PM - Early-season snow has hit portions of southern Ontario, a one week after summer-like temperatures settled into the region. Meanwhile, Calgary is experiencing a similar -- albeit opposite -- weather pattern, with warm weather bathing the south following a bout of snow.

The threat for lake-effect snow will remain in southern Ontario into Thursday.

A national pattern change that contributed to a persistent cooling trough across the west has shifted eastward.

Since September and through the first half of October, average high temperatures across the board have been running 5 to 10°C BELOW normal in the west. Now, for the most part, dry and milder weather will be making up for all of that lost autumn warmth. Both Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta saw their warmest day in over five weeks on Tuesday, with even milder temperatures set to break 20°C through the day on Wednesday.

Here's a look at how both provinces are faring, in photos.
