Underneath Antarctica's ice sheet lies a diverse, rocky terrain.
On Tuesday, NASA unveiled Bedmap2, the most detailed map of Antarctica's bedrock to date.
The data is a significant update to the original Bedmap, which was compiled more than a decade ago.
NASA collaborated with the British Antarctic Survey, whose researchers used decades' worth of data, including NASA satellite images, to incorporate millions of new measurements.
"Our understanding of what lies beneath the world's biggest ice sheet has taken another leap forward," NASAexplorer says.
"...These measurements will improve scientist's understanding of the evolving Antarctic ice sheet and its influence on the surrounding ocean and our global climate."
