The UK is facing another powerful storm system that may be every bit as fierce as one earlier this week.

The UK Met Office has issued a "red" warning for northwest England and western Wales, the first time in more than a year.

Hurricane force wind gusts up to 170 km/h have been reported, bringing down trees and power lines and leaving hundreds of thousands without power.

"The public should take action to alter their travel arrangements during this spell of storm force winds," the Met Office warned.

5,800 properties have been flooded in England since the beginning of December.
