NASA sees electric blue clouds high above Earth's surface

Tuesday, September 25, 2018, 5:42 PM - A NASA high-altitude balloon has captured millions of photos of a the rare "electric blue cloud” phenomenon, some 80 kilometres above Earth's surface.

The clouds are called polar mesospheric clouds and are comprised of ice crystals.




NASA scientists used the images to create animations so they can study waves that form in the high atmosphere.

NASA says this will enable them to “better understand turbulence in the atmosphere, as well as in oceans, lakes, and other planetary atmospheres,” and it could lead to better weather forecasting.
