MV Highlanders moving slowly through ice off Cape Breton
Wednesday, March 18, 2015, 12:01 AM - About 190 passengers on the MV Highlanders spent Monday night stranded in the ice off Cape Breton, according to a Tuesday morning announcement by Marine Atlantic.
The ship got stuck around 8 p.m.
The Canadian Coast Guard helped dislodge the ship, which has since made it to port in Newfoundland Tuesday evening.
"It encountered some pressurized thick ice just off Cape Breton and became stuck," Darrell Mercer of Marine Atlantic told the CBC.
"This is just another of those challenges Mother Nature seems to be throwing at us."
The passengers were never in any harm, and were kept comfortable and warm during the delay.
Officials say this winter has been a challenge for marine travel in Atlantic Canada, with ice moving in early, and in larger amounts, than previous years.
