Monday, October 23, 2017, 1:45 PM - Four people died on Monday morning as Typhoon Lan made landfall along the south coast of Japan.

The system brought torrential rain as it charged toward Honshu, with maximum sustained winds near 140 km/h, and gusts as high as 195 km/h.

Reuters reports that while Lan caused landslides and flooding in parts, Tokyo was spared the brunt of the then Category 2 storm.

On Monday afternoon local time, Lan was moving northeast through the Pacific, downgraded to a tropical depression.

At least four people are reported dead, with thousands of residents ordered to evacuate.

According to Kyodo news agency, one man died after scaffolding collapsed on top of him, a fisherman was killed while tending to his boat.

After landfall, the centre of the storm was located in the Pacific, northeast of the Japanese island of Hokkaido.

The good news is the storm is now headed into a less-favorable environment, with colder ocean surface waters and increasing wind shear in the atmosphere, meaning it is unlikely to strengthen further.

As a result, Lan is forecast to become a tropical depression by Tuesday.

Officials in Okinawa and Hyogo prefectures moved voting for the country's national election ahead one day in an attempt to keep the storm from impacting voter turnout.

Even from the other side of the globe, Lan will have an impact here at home, as the remnants of the powerful storm influence the jet stream across the Pacific.
