Friday, February 27, 2015, 6:38 PM - Many of Manitoba's lake levels are well above-normal this year and that could elevate the risk of flooding in some communities according the the province's 2015 flood outlook, released Friday.

The province says there is a "variable risk" for potential flooding, but the outlook could change depending on weather conditions.

Ice jams may be a concern as warmer temperatures move into the area.

"There is a chance of localized flooding due to ice jam blockages in drains, ditches and small streams," the outlook says.

"Major ice jams are difficult to predict as to location and magnitude and cannot be ruled out."

Delayed thaw and spring rain could cause snow to melt rapidly, elevating the risk.

"A single precipitation event similar to the rainstorm that occurred in the summer of 2014 could change the flood outlook significantly," the outlook says.

In the meantime, officials are taking steps to mitigate flood damage.

Equipment onhand includes 2.5 million sandbags, more than 19,000 super sandbags and 17 heavy-duty pumps to move large volumes of water.
