Man who sold Boston snow is back -- selling autumn leaves

Sunday, October 11, 2015, 5:32 PM - Every year, trees across North America transform into a rainbow of vibrant colours, as leaves change from green to the red, orange and yellow hues synonymous with the autumn season.

Although there are countless locations to admire the brilliant branches across Canada and the United States, not everyone has to opportunity to take in the fall scenery every year.

Thanks to leaps and bounds in the world of online shopping, you can now own a piece of fall foliage harvested from the forests of New England for less than twenty dollars.

Earlier this month, Kyle Waring, of Somerville, Massachusetts launched a website that will ship a collection of dried fall leaves straight to a customer's door.

For $19.99 USD, customers will receive a package containing three colourful leaves, one red, one yellow and one green in the mail.

So what's the difference between ordering leaves online versus going out and picking a few yourself?

"Our foliage experts hike all around the Northeast in search for the perfect leaves," reads a statement on the online shop, shipfoliage.com. "During our collection phase we sift and filter through our inventory, hand selecting only "Grade A" foliage."

If your household is not in need of a trifecta of colourful foliage, the site recommends sending them as gifts to family and friends with a personalized message or greeting during the autumn months.

The desire to acquire international leaves may come as a disappointment to some -- as the site will only ship leaves within the United States.

The idea of buying leaves may sound foolish, but Waring has managed to tap into a small market, selling more than 200 leaf bundles since the beginning of October.

And Waring is no stranger to capitalizing on the bounties of the season.

He launched a similar seasonal business model this past winter when he shipped snow from Boston's record snowfall through his website ShipSnowYo.com. A 5.5 kilogram box of 'historical' snow was available for $89 USD.

In total, Waring said he received orders for about 326 kilograms of snow from customers across the United States.

The U.S. region of New England is comprised of six unique states: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.

New England states bring in an estimated $3 million in tourism revenue during the autumn foliage season, which typically lasts for a couple of weeks in October.
