Tuesday, May 12, 2015, 6:20 PM - Michael Hammons of Athens, Georgia has been arrested after smashing the window of a Mustang to save a dog that was trapped inside.
Hammons was charged with criminal trespassing Saturday when he attempted to rescue the dog, a small Pomerian mix, while a group of witnesses were waiting for authorities to arrive to free the dog.
"I knew there'd be consequences, but it didn't matter," Hammons told WAGA-TV. "Glass, they make new glass every day, but they could never replace that dog."
Hammons said he only took action because the dog appeared to be in distress.

Once free, witnesses took the dog into the shade and gave it water.
Police didn't want to charge the man but the car's owner, 22 year-old Elantra Cunningham, insisted on pressing charges. Cunningham received a citation for leaving her dog in the car.
In Georgia, it's legal to smash a window to help a child in distress, but not an animal.
