Laurier student solves 5,800 Rubik’s cubes in 24 hours

Most people could not solve one Rubik’s cube in 24 hours, let alone being able to solve the puzzle time and time again for 24 consecutive hours. But one student decided to take on such a feat as an attempt to beat the Guinness World Record for the most Rubik’s cubes solved in the span of 24 hours.
Eric Limeback, a third year business student at Wilfrid Laurier University, began working on his Rubik’s cube attempt on Thursday, October 3rd and finished the following day a little before 1 p.m. He not only managed to surpass the previous record of 4,786 cubes solved in a 24 hour period, held by Milan Baticz of Hungary, but he solved his way to 5,800 cubes. This means that he was able to complete each cube in approximately 15 seconds.
Lubix Cube, an American company who creates speed cubes, sponsored the event and provided 10 custom-made cubes for Limeback to use. Volunteers and Members of the Laurier Rubik’s Cube Club helped scramble these cubes and passed them to him as he completed each one. His team also used a list of randomly generated algorithms to ensure that no two cubes were alike.
The event was held in the concourse located in the Fred Nicholas Campus Centre at the university. Many people were able to witness this event and were in awe as they passed the table that Limeback and his team of volunteers were seated.
Most impressive was the way he finished off his 24 hour marathon. The crowd roared as Limeback put on a blindfold to complete a cube close to the end of the record attempt . As he made it to the last cube and neared his goal of getting an even 5,800 solves, twenty seconds were left on the clock. Most people were confident he would reach his goal, but with a slight fumble the cube took longer than expected. The student slammed the cube on the table and finished with less than one second left. Immediately the crowd roared as they realized he had completed his last cube within the time limit.
According to a university spokesperson, Guinness has yet to verify the record which will take a few weeks to get approved.
As a Rubik’s cube competitor, Limeback has broken over eight different national records since he began competing at the age of 14. He currently has the fastest time for solving the cube blindfolded, his time being 38 seconds.
