Lightning bolt halts GO Train service, strong storms strike

Monday, July 16, 2018, 9:14 PM - Ontario's latest extreme heat episode is coming to an end with crackling thunderstorms, whose effects have included halting some GO Train service, knocking out power and triggering localized flooding.

GO Transit reported on Twitter a lightning strike was to blame for a signal problem that made it impossible for trains to run westward from Union on the Lakeshore West line.

"There are 3 trains full of passengers already holding west of Union and we can’t send any more trains westbound until it is safe to do so.  If you can make alternative arrangements, we recommend it," GO Transit tweeted from its Lakeshore West account, adding travellers could make their way to some stations using the TTC.

GO Transit later tweeted that service would resume a little after the 8 p.m. hour once the issue was resolved.

Delays were reported on other GO lines as the storms roared through the GTA and southwestern Ontario with strong winds and torrential rains. Elsewhere, power outages were reported, though Hydro One reported around 3,000 customers out of power around the 7 p.m. hour. Torrential, localized downpours also sparked some flooding, and the storms themselves made for some scary-looking skies.

Below is a selection of Tweets showing how the storms have played out so far.
