Icy roads spark 15-car pileup near Lethbridge, Alberta

Saturday, December 20, 2014, 8:09 AM - When you're told to slow down on icy roads, it's not just an excess of caution.

The video above, uploaded to YouTube by Joey Cook, shows what happens when even one vehicle spins out on a slippery highway on December 15. The resulting pile-up eventually involved 15 vehicles, including Cook's own.

Unless drivers are careful, the scene could be repeated on some Prairie roads this weekend, with freezing drizzle risk in some communities.

The footage, which garnered more than 300,000 views by Saturday morning, is shaky not only because of sub-zero temperatures.

"I'm shaking cause I just did a 180 and was T-boned," Cook writes. "I had two little kids in my car."

The Lethbridge Regional Police Service says it started when one driver on Whoop Up Drive lost control due to icy conditions on the road, spinning out and colliding with another vehicle.

Neither driver was injured and no charges were laid, but the police said eastbound lanes were closed while the cleanup and investigation was underway, and the speed limit was temporarily lowered to 60 km/h.

There's a chance of slippery roads this weekend also. Alberta saw freezing rain Friday night, and patchy freezing drizzle is set to move into Saskatchewan and Manitoba on Saturday, with more risk on Sunday.

There's also more snow on the way to Alberta, as multiple clipper systems take aim at the province, with wide-reaching effects.

"The first is coming on Sunday, with amounts under 3 cm and some patchy freezing drizzle as the warm front passes through the region," Weather Network meteorologist Brian Dillon said early Saturday.

Amounts could reach up to 15 cm along the foothills and higher elevations, and Dillon says forecasters are keeping an eye on a system that could impact southern Alberta for Christmas Day.
