Here's why this massive beach house survived Michael

Tuesday, October 16, 2018, 2:12 PM - The owners of a Florida beach house that survived Hurricane Michael relatively unscathed aren't surprised, even though most of the other homes along the coast were leveled.

The three-storey, four-bedroom rental property known as the Sand Palace resides in Mexico Beach.

Owner Dr. Lebron Lackey says it was the design that kept the house in tact.

"When it came time to to make a decision about what level of material or what to use, we didn't pay attention to code. We went above and beyond code and we asked the question what would survive the big one. And we've consistently tried to build it for that."

The home is built to withstand winds up to 400 kilometres per hour, so it could easily withstand Michael's 249 kilometre per hour winds.

"We're glad our house survived," Sand Palace co-owner Russell King told CNN, "but we're so sad-- we're overcome with sadness for anybody else."

Still, the house is in need of some repairs. According to the home's Facebook page, the ground floor and the stairs leading up to the middle floor have been destroyed, along with the windows in one of the bedrooms.
