Canadian city blazes a trail in reducing energy consumption

PRESENTED BY

Friday, April 15, 2016, 3:35 PM - You might think of Calgary as the land of Big Oil, but as Deb Matejicka reports in the video above, the city has been on the cutting edge of clean energy for quite some time.

Just one example: The city is on track to replace 80,000 streetlights by 2018 with more efficient "flat lense" bulbs.

Not only will that reduce emissions, it'll also cut down on light pollution and save city coffers some $1.7 million annyally.

That's not all. The city invested in wind power some time ago, and much of Calgary's light rail is powered by it.

And as for construction in the famously booming community, regulations demand new buildings meet or exceed certain Light and Energy Efficient Design (LEED) standards.
