Saturday, March 25, 2017, 2:26 PM - This Saturday millions of people in more than 170 countries will turn off the lights for an hour at 8:30 p.m. local time as a way to acknowledge climate action.

Organized by the World Wild Fund for Nature (WWF), Earth Hour is a worldwide grassroots movement uniting people to protect the planet. This year marks the 10th anniversary of Earth Hour. The initiative started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia in 2007. Since then, it has grown to engage more than 7,000 cities and towns across the globe.

"We started Earth Hour to make a statement. Never did we imagine that we would be writing a dramatic new story for climate action where each individual can help turn the page toward a sustainable, climate-resilient future for all," said Siddarth Das, executive director, Earth Hour Global in a statement. "In ten years, Earth Hour has helped protect seas in Russia and Argentina, raised funds for conservation projects in Southeast Asia and the Amazon and even created a forest in Uganda and none of this would have been possible without the force that binds us all together – our collective determination to protect the one planet we all share."

Here are some other fun ideas to do:

1. Grab your telescope and camera and watch the skies

Since the lights will be out in most major cities, this hour will be the perfect opportunity to check out the stars. Throw on a few extra layers, set up some lawn chairs and look for constellations.

2. Light a candle and listen to the rain

A room full of candles can be sophisticated, while fewer candles can be great for telling scary stories. If you have children or pets, make sure you keep the candles out of reach.

3. Take a walk with a friend

With warmer weather on the rise and longer days, it's the perfect opportunity to head outside and be active.

4. Catch up on sleep

Daylight Saving Time leaving you tired and groggy? Hit the switch and head to bed.

5. Spark some conversation by the fire

Grab the guitar, put on some layers and play some tunes around the fire.

6. Host an energy efficient potluck

Hold a potluck and invite your guests to bring a dish that requires low heat or no heat at all.

7. Play a board game

Why not break out a deck of cards or some old games? Not only are they fun, but they'll add to your party's energy level.
