Strong winds, more snow on tap for Atlantic Canada

By Monday, special weather statements had already been issued for parts of Atlantic Canada ahead of a winter storm that could affect the region over the next couple of days.

"This next storm will have a substantial impact on Atlantic Canada late Thursday into Friday," says Weather Network meteorologist Doug Gillham, "but a more offshore track means that this should just be a snow event."

Gillham adds that the coldest air of the season thus far will also impact the region.

Energy from the Great Lakes will impact Atlantic Canada, primarily Nova Scotia, starting Thursday afternoon.

It's part of the same system that's set to bring snow and wind to southern Ontario.

"Frigid temperatures combined with wind chills well set up the event," says Weather Network meteorologist Brian Dillon.

"We're expecting northeasterly gusts between 90 and 60 km/h in Nova Scotia and PEI Thursday night into Friday."

Parts of Nova Scotia could see up to 40 cm of snow. The rest of the region is expected to receive up to 10 cm, but "models are still in disagreement with the strength of this system over Atlantic Canada," Dillon says.
