Thousands of customers without power in southern B.C.

Sunday, February 18, 2018, 7:56 PM - Parts of southern British Columbia continued to deal with heavy snow and powerful winds on Sunday, as B.C. Hydro reported over 50 outages had left more the 20,000 customers without power at 9 a.m. PST.

At 4 a.m, outages peaked at over 29,000 affected, and by the late afternoon had been whittled down to around 11,000, with the greatest numbers in northern Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland/Sunshine Coast.

Snow eased on Sunday through southern British Columbia, and all snowfall warnings have dropped.

Winds will continue to gust at 70-80 km/h through Sunday afternoon and evening through the Haro and Juan De Fuca straits.

Cold and dry weather dominates until Tuesday, with potential for another shot of snow for the Lower Mainland, lasting into Wednesday.

While the province will see a break in the active pattern early next week, chilly conditions will remain locked in place, putting a multi-year temperature streak at stake in Victoria.
