Heavy rain and risk for cold core funnel cloud development in southern Manitoba
Saturday, July 26, 2014, 3:18 PM -
Parts of southern Manitoba are in for quite the wet day.
Rainfall warnings have been issued for the region, where an intense low pressure system is forecast to produce bands of heavy rain throughout the day.
"Localized accumulations of 50 mm or more are possible," says Environment Canada (EC) in a weather statement. "Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads."
Additionally, there is also a risk for the development of cold core funnels Saturday afternoon.
"These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms," EC explains. "This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado."
If conditions become more favourable for the development of landspout tornadoes, watches and warnings will be issued.
