"It's making things interesting in the Maritimes," tweeted The Weather Network's Chris Murphy.

Severe thunderstorm watches and warnings were issued for parts of the Gaspe Peninsula Friday morning, with the threat for severe thunderstorms capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

As activity tapered off Friday night, parts of Newfoundland remained under a tropical cyclone warning. Rain is expected to continue for the province through the overnight hours.

After Friday's high heat and humidity, temperatures will return to more seasonal values Saturday as the cold front passes through. Cooler weather spreads into the region through mid week next week before warm weather moves east ahead of the September long weekend.

"We'll see a warming trend for southern Ontario and Quebec and into the Maritimes late next week with a warm Labour Day expected," adds Dr. Doug Gillham, another meteorologist at The Weather Network. "It will also be a very warm to hot start for the back-to-school week."
