Friday, September 7, 2018, 5:17 PM - The Hawaii Tourism Authority receives packages from all over the world, containing illegal souvenirs that were taken from Hawaii.

"People decide to take parts of our hawaii home, and that's not ok. we have a belief and kinship with the land and we have a relationship as native hawaiians to this place. and for us, you're taking part of who we are," Kalani Kaanaana of the Hawaii Tourism Authority told CNN.

The items are shipped back in boxes and envelopes of all sizes, and often packed in plastic wrap and styrofoam, creating mountains of packaging trash.

BAD LUCK?

Many of the packages come with letters of apology. Others say the items brought them bad luck.

Sam Ohu Gon, a practitioner of Hawaiian culture and a scientist says it migh be coincidence, or maybe it's karma.

"Hawaii is indeed a place full of mana. every object -- the rain, the wind, the stones, the plants and animals, the people who are there - so when you do frivilous things with that kind of power, you're bound to pay for it," he says.

Officials try to return the items back to where they were returned -- but some of the items come back contaminated, and that could put Hawaii's natural resources at risk.
