Great white shark closes beaches at the Australian city of Newcastle for 6th day
Thursday, January 15, 2015, 12:38 PM - If you're planning on heading Down Under in the near future, you may want to think twice before throwing on a pair of swimming trunks. Beaches at the Australian city of Newcastle have been closed for a sixth day because of a 5-meter (16-foot) great white shark that is lurking in coastal waters.
Newcastle City Council Aquatic Services Coordinator Peter Withers says the shark was first spotted on Saturday off Merewether Beach and was last seen off Nobbys Beach on Wednesday afternoon.
He says beaches are typically closed at the city of 315,000 people 160 kilometres north of Sydney four or five times a summer due to shark sightings.
Wiithers said Thursday he has never encountered such a large shark or one that had lingered in the area for so long during his 37 years working for the council.
