It's time to trade in flip flops and beach towels for backpacks and note books.

The back to school forecast is shaping up to be a pleasant one for western portions of the country.

Summer-like temperatures will continue across much of western Canada on Tuesday.

The Prairies are looking dry, with cloud cover building across southern Alberta.

BC is looking at the risk of scattered showers or thundershowers across the south.

Vancouver will ring in the new school year with temperatures hovering around the 20C mark -- so pack a light jacket.

It'll be a few degrees warmer in Calgary and sunny. You may want to keep the sunglasses and sunscreen handy.

What to expect on the roads

Commuters should prepare for extra traffic on the roads this Tuesday as teachers, parents and students get back into a groove.

"There's a lot happening simultaneously in a school zone, so the drivers of cars have to slow their speed and watch out for the child that isn't looking out for them," warns Sergeant Jack West with the Toronto Police.

"Quite often the pedestrian may see the driver in the car, but that doesn't mean the driver necessarily sees them because of the climate, the weather or a fogged up window."

As the school year progresses, meteorologists warn that fall is a transitional period, with fluctuating precipitation patterns.

Forecasters are calling for slightly above normal temperatures from the tip of Haida Gwaii down the Central and South Coasts and Vancouver Island, with near-normal temperatures elsewhere.

An umbrella may be a backpack mainstay for some places throughout the fall season. Models are calling for above-normal precipitation near Chetwynd south and east, through the Rockies and Columbia mountains, with near-normal rainfall elsewhere.
