Wednesday, May 9, 2018, 9:41 AM - Welcome to spring in Canada, in particular, Manitoba. As parts of the province dealt with high heat and extreme fire dangers earlier this week, others are currently facing winter storm warnings...in May.

"This is why we love spring in Canada so much," says Weather Network meteorologist Erin Wenckstern. "Winnipeg, often known as "Winterpeg," was the first major Canadian city to reach over 30°C on Monday, meanwhile northern parts of the province are dealing with snow!"

And heavy snow at that. So much so, a winter storm warning is in effect.

Environment Canada issued a winter storm warning for Churchill, Manitoba with heavy snow forecast to fall through Wednesday. Between 10-15 cm of snow is expected along with intense northerly winds.

"In addition to the snow, intense northerly winds gusting to 90 km/h are expected to develop Wednesday morning creating widespread reduced visibilities in blowing snow," Environment Canada warns. "Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow."

A similar scene developed in Yellowknife early Tuesday as heavy snow made things look more like the heart of winter.

"The snow will move into northern Manitoba and southern Nunavut as a full blown winter storm with widespread snow moving across the area in through Wednesday," Wenckstern says.
