If you’re heading out to any Remembrance Day ceremonies this coming Monday, be sure to dress for the weather as many of them take place outside. The forecast across the country is calling for temperatures hovering around 8°C (feeling like 4°C) and some light showers.

Remembrance Day is a somber occasion, a time for personal reflection and for honouring fallen soldiers and those who helped them. If you're attending a service, you should dress accordingly, so as to denote the reverence of the event. A wool coat or rain repellent trench will keep you nice and dry, while a hat can offer extra protection from the elements. Since it is a memorial, a palette of darker colours is appropriate to wear while paying your respects—Kate Middleton was pictured during last year’s Remembrance Day services in a black military-style Diane von Furstenberg coat and wide-brimmed hat.

Also, be sure to opt for comfortable footwear, since you’ll likely be standing outside on a concrete surface for an extended period of time. These over-the-knee riding boots are practical and will also give you good mileage into the winter season. Gloves and a scarf may also be good options for keeping warm in that quintessential cold November rain.

And most importantly, don’t forget to show your support by wearing a poppy. One of the most prominent symbols of Remembrance Day, the poppy was forever immortalized by Canadian Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae’s poem In Flanders Fields, which was said to be the best-known poem of its era. The observation that poppies bloomed over the graves of soldiers in Flanders inspired its adoption as one of the world’s most recognized memorial symbols for those who have died in the line of duty. Wear yours proudly and with honour this Remembrance Day.
