Now that the weather has turned resoundingly cold, we can haul our warmer layers out of storage for good this season. The weekend ahead is predicting highs hovering between a chilly 5-7°C across the prairies and eastern Canada, so you’ll want to make sure you’re appropriately bundled before heading out. With the recent premiere of American Horror Story’s third season, titled Coven, and Halloween approaching next week, we thought it was the perfect time to explore cozy and cryptic fashions. Something wicked this way comes!

Seriously, is there a better example of dressing for the cold while still looking impossibly chic than a witch? We’re referring to modern witches of the Emma Roberts and Jessica Lange variety, of course. They understand the power of dressing in all black—not to mention that it’s excellent at slimming down a silhouette, which is crucial when layering up. They prefer sleek and polished silhouettes, opting for pencil skits, peplum tops and pointy-toed pumps. They also share a penchant for collared shirtdresses, floor skimming maxis and cat-eye shades.

Inject a little occult opulence into your own wardrobe by employing the use of stark contrasts, like black and white. Pair a crisp white blouse with a body-skimming black mini for an eerie elegance. This dress from Alexander Terekhov gives you the idea, although if the price tag is less than ideal, reworking a few staples in your wardrobe would allow you to achieve a similar effect. Keep cozy in a sharply tailored jacket, such as this wool and cashmere coat by Babaton, pictured here in a luxe grey.

For your covenly accessories, a pair of severely heeled shoes is essential, such as these Tamara Ankle Booties from Cynthia Vincent, which will have no problem conquering potentially inclement weather. A wide-brimmed hat, à la Saint Laurent SS13, is also an excellent way to combat colder conditions—this wool style from Michael Stars would do just the trick. Finally, finish off the look with a wine-stained pout and some pagan-esque baubles, such as this bull bracelet set.

And there you have it—an ensemble that will have you looking like an ethereal enchantress while still keeping you toasty warm!
