Fashion Forecast: Dressing for the weather in Halifax

Last week’s Fashion Forecast was all about how to dress for Vancouver’s West Coast weather and laidback vibe. This week, we’re travelling across the country to the east coast to take a look at what the weekend weather in Halifax will be like. With a high of 23°C (feeling like 27) and only a 20 per cent chance of precipitation, it’s shaping up to be ideal conditions to relax by the seashore.
A community unto itself, Maritime style has always had its own distinct brand of bohemianism- a certain mode of dressing that seems to blend hippie with hip, eco with economical. We’re talking vintage dresses worn with jeans and screenprinted tees paired with second-hand cardigans.
Life on an island-like piece of land demands a certain level of resourcefulness, and often requires mixing labels with local pieces. And the look is ever-evolving with continued influence from today’s modern beatniks—artists, musicians, writers and students—consistently taking a creative and budget-conscious approach to fashion.
Haligonian style is also dictated in large part by the weather, as close proximity to the ocean can often serve up rather extreme conditions. We recommend starting with a light base that you can layer on top of as needed, and a solid pair of jeans is just the place to start.
Rag & Bone skinnies come in a dark wash that is perfect for fall, with heavy whiskering and fading on the upper thigh making for a lovingly worn look. For footwear, a pair of Minnetonka Mocs will put you in touch with your inner hippie child—this black double-fringed pair comes with metal concho decals that provide just the right amount of hardware.
And of course, what Haligonian outfit would be complete without some eclectic accessories? We think these brooch drop earrings from Anthropologie and red Cambridge satchel are great finishing touches.
