Your punny Heritage Classic forecast

Saturday, October 22, 2016, 11:41 AM - Government departments aren't famous for their sense of humour, but the folks at Environment Canada's Winnipeg office aren't shy about using puns to get their message across.

This weekend is the 2016 Heritage Classic. The main game, featuring the Winnipeg Jets and the Edmonton Oilers, is set for Sunday at Winnipeg's Investors Group Field, but the Saturday Alumni game is its own special treat, featuring such hockey legends as Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier and Teemu Selanne.

As it happens, there's a chance of rain in the forecast, and Environment Canada put out a special weather statement for the city in language any hockey fan will get:

"Fans in the stands and alumni on the ice will see the puck drop this afternoon to an air temperature around 10 degrees. An approaching low pressure system will bring rain to Winnipeg this evening making a Messier of the ice. Hopefully this game is a Great One that Finnishes before the rain starts. The rain will persist throughout the night with 5-10 mm expected before tapering off Sunday morning."

Sunday's Oilers-Jets game, meanwhile, is looking a little drier.

"The Jets will play the Oilers Sunday afternoon under cloudy conditions with an air temperature around 8 degrees and 20 km/h winds from the northwest. Game on!" Environment Canada says.

That south-of-the-border system is set to bring some showers to southern Manitoba and Saskatchewan Saturday afternoon and evening. Forecasters say the same low will bring some rain to southern Ontario on Sunday.
