Drone flies close to plane landing at Winnipeg Airport

Monday, June 13, 2016, 4:11 PM - A drone came within 25 metres of a commercial airplane attempting to land at Winnipeg's Richardson International Airport over the weekend, according to police.

Police say the pilot was landing when he spotted the drone. It was flying at an approximate altitude of 900 metres.

The aircraft was able to land without incident.

Authorities searched the area for the drone and its operator, but could not locate them.

"The Winnipeg Police Service reminds UAV owners that a significant portion of the City of Winnipeg is controlled air space. UAV operation for personal use is subject to Transport Canada restrictions regarding altitude, purpose, size of UAV and area of use. Commercial UAV operators must be in possession of a valid Special Flight Operations Certificate and are required to comply with all the restrictions contained in the SFOC," police said in a statement.

DRONE LAWS IN CANADA

Large drones require special permission from Transport Canada in order to operate. Some models require a special flight operations certificate as well.

If you operate, or plan on operating, a drone in Canada Transport Canada recommends:

  • Flying during daylight and in good weather 
  • Always keeping your aircraft in sight 
  • Respecting the privacy of others
  • Avoid airports, populated areas, moving vehicles, or flying higher than 90 metres
  • Reading and understanding the government's exemption conditions regarding drone operation.
