Watch as thieves steal an idling car from a driveway
Thursday, January 17, 2019, 3:36 PM - When the weather gets cold it's common practice for many Canadians to let their car run for a bit before hitting the road. But leaving an unlocked, unattended car to idle can end up costing you.
In a recent tweet, the Calgary Police shared surveillance video of a thief stealing an unattended van from a residential driveway.
An apparent accomplice can be seen in a car waiting at the end of the driveway.

"Likely defrosting your vehicle in the morning? Don't leave it running and unattended or this could be you! Five people in Calgary learned the hard way this morning," the Calgary Police said on Twitter.
According to the police, the thieves in the video were apprehended "thanks to high quality video surveillance."
PREVENTING CAR THEFT
If you must warm up your car, police suggest using a remote starter or lock the vehicle and use a spare key.

"Don't leave your vehicle running. Don't leave it unlocked. Don't make it that easy for thieves to take your car," Sgt. Kerry Schmidt tells The Weather Network.
Schmidt also suggests installing motion-activated lights and a high-resolution surveillance system on your property.
