Saturday, October 22, 2016, 4:04 PM - Bruno the Labrador retriever is recovering after his owners found him trapped at the bottom of a well near Estevan, Saskatchewan where he survived on rainwater and snow for 27 days.

The lab was playing on the family farm on Sept. 17 for about two hours. His owner Cindy Billesberger knew something was up when Bruno failed to return home that evening. The family searched the area, but were unable to locate the dog. Weeks passed by and there was still no sign of Bruno.

Billesberger's husband went on a walk with the family's other dogs on Oct. 14 when one pup refused to move from a spot in tall grass. The animal was standing over an abandoned well. Billesberger's husband looked inside and found Bruno lying in the mud.

The dog owner's son ran to the site, jumped in the well and managed to lift Bruno up to safety. The family brought the emaciated dog to Prairie Animal Health Centre in Estevan.

"His eyes were sunk in, they were infected," Billesberger told Global News. "Cuts along his eyes, all his paws. He's lost fur off his back end and was just a mess."

The seven-year-old dog was severely dehydrated and suffered from hypothermia. He lost about half his body weight.

"To be honest most of us don't feel that he had more than a couple of days left in him," veterinarian Kristin Caldwell told Global News.

Bruno was transferred to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine on Wednesday, where he continues to make progress.

Day 1 of care.

"We're working diligently to provide the best medical care for our patient, Bruno, and we are very happy with his progress," Dr. Duncan Hockley at the WCVM told Global News.

Bruno has responded well to initial therapy and remains in the intensive care unit.

"Bruno's recovery will not be quick, but he is displaying a strong will to live. Our small animal medicine clinicians are managing Bruno's care in collaboration with our nutritionist."

The family hopes to bring their beloved lab back to their Saskatchewan home soon.
