Thursday, June 16, 2016, 6:03 PM - Parts of Northern Canada are referred to as Arctic Deserts, but the Province of British Columbia is home to a true desert. Cacti, sagebrush, dry air and unique desert acclimated species can be found in Osoyoos in the South Okanagan.

1. The summer season is ideal for heat lovers. The average temperature in July and August is around 31°C. It is not uncommon for temperatures to reach in to the high 30’s and even the low 40’s.

2. It is home to Canada’s warmest lake. Lake Osoyoos has an average temperature of 24°C in the summer months.

3. It has a bustling grape growing and wine industry. There are many unique microclimates and soil variations, which allow the cultivation of over 60 grape varieties in a small area. It is also known for its agriculture where the blossoming dining industry incorporates locally grown ingredients.

4. Osoyoos has a rich aboriginal history, which is very celebrated. Visitors can spend time at the Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre to learn more about the rich history in Canada’s desert.

5. The name Osoyoos is commonly mispronounced with people saying ‘soy’ like the sauce. The name of the town came from the Sylix (Okanagan Nation) language. “Souyoos” is a word used to describe the geography of Osoyoos Lake. It means a narrow waterway or where the land almost meets. It is pronounced O-Sue-Use, however you’ll hear variations during a visit. No matter how you say it the friendly residents of Osoyoos will just be happy to chat and welcome you.
