Death toll rises in Indonesia mudslide disaster

Sunday, December 14, 2014, 1:39 PM - At least 32 people are confirmed to have died in this weekend's mudslide in Indonesia.
Heavy rain on the island of Java, home to two thirds of the country's population, triggered the massive slide on Saturday, sending tons of rock and dirt down onto the village of Jemblung below.
More than 100 houses were buried, according to the Associated Press. Thousands of rescuers descended on the area, but the continuing rain hampered the search effort for several hours.
Aside from the 32 known fatalities, 76 people are still missing.
Storms have battered the sprawling archipelago in recent days, and the Associated Press says several other mudslides have been reported, although no further deaths have been reported.
The disaster comes at the same time strong storms lashed the U.S. west coast, causing mudslides and flooding, and even sparking a tornado in the city of Los Angeles that damaged several buildings, but fortunately.
In Canada last week, unrelenting rains sparked states of emergency in parts of British Columbia, with the rains and tied causing a seawall collapse in Delta.
