Thursday, April 12, 2018, 3:53 PM - Collisions amid wintry conditions forced a shutdown of Highway 1 in Manitoba Thursday.

Manitoba RCMP says two separate collisions in the morning hours were responsible for the shutdown between Brandon and Virden, at a time when snow still would still have been falling and highway conditions were likely to have been not ideal.

The RCMP says the first crash, around 7 a.m., involved four semi trucks and a pickup. One person was taken to hospital in Brandon with non life-threatening injuries, while another was airlifted to hospital in Winnipeg, and is in stable condition.

The second crash took place around an hour later, resulting in a pileup that also closed the highway. One person was sent to hospital in Brandon with non life-threatening injuries.

Highway 1 was reopened in both directions in the early afternoon.

Weather was a factor in both incidents, with the RCMP saying both collisions occurred while traffic had stopped due to weather conditions. Two men have been charged with imprudent driving under the Manitoba Highway Traffic Act, which carries a fine of $203. Weather conditions have improved in the province and Manitoba 411 shows most southern highways clear.
