Weather changes put white Christmas at risk in S. Ontario

Digital writers

Tuesday, December 19, 2017, 6:54 AM - Hoping for snow on the ground on December 25th? Thanks to a surge of mild air, your White Christmas may be in jeopardy.

Temperatures crept up to the low single digits on Monday, coupled with rain, a rain-snow mix, and drizzle in some areas, and conditions are expected to remain windy and above seasonal until mid-week, meaning even more snowmelt.

In eastern Ontario, some school bus services were cancelled, and freezing rain warnings began the day in some areas.

"Periods of freezing rain are likely for a few hours this morning as another area of precipitation moves into eastern Ontario. The precipitation may start off as snow before changing to freezing rain, but snowfall amounts are expected to be limited to a few centimetres at most," Environment Canada says.

Sub-zero temperatures will return Thursday, accompanied by a system that could bring a mix of snow and rain to the area.

"The next system to move through on Thursday night into Friday will bring widespread accumulating snow across southern Ontario. However, as temperatures begin to climb, precipitation will likely end with a period of rain/mixing through Friday evening into Saturday," Weather Network meteorologist Jessie Uppal says.

That has the potential to make a mess of roadways and slow down commutes across the region. Depending on the temperature, it could also wash away additional snow.

Weather Network meteorologist Dr. Doug Gillham adds that forecasters are monitorying a Christmas Eve/Christmas Day system that could bring some snow "at the last minute" for some people in southern Ontario and Quebec.

Check back often in the days ahead as we update our perspective on the weather impacting the region.
