Glass bridge of nightmares open for business, tourists flock

Monday, August 22, 2016, 10:33 AM - The latest triumph in mankind's quest for high-up tourist terror opened for business last week.

China's headline's grabbing glass bridge, suspended between two mountains in Hunan Province, was actually completed in December, and authorities presumably wanted to make absolutely sure it was safe for the thousands of tourists expected to one day pad cautiously over it. At one point, the BBC sent a reporter to slam the glass with a sledge hammer.

It spans 430 m, about 300 m above the ground. It's six metres wide and consists of 99 triple-layered glass panels, according to the BBC.

It seems to have proven a hit with the tourists. Chinese social media networks are filled with photos of people who braved the walkway.

"I wanted to feel awe-inspired by this bridge. But I’m not afraid – it seems safe!" one, Wang Min, told The Guardian.

If you fancy trying it out, be prepared to wait awhile and book early. Officials are only allowing 8,000 people on the bridge per day.
