Canada Day tornado confirmed in Ontario. Here's where

Monday, July 4, 2016, 2:19 PM - Canada Day was wet and stormy for many, and in eastern parts of Ontario, the storms turned severe enough to spawn at least one tornado.

Environment Canada confirmed the province's second tornado of the year touched down over Buckhorn in Peterborough County Friday afternoon, based on video evidence. No significant damage was associated with it, and no injuries were reported. Environment Canada, which relies on damage assessments to determine a tornado's strength, did not give Friday's twister an EF rating.

One Twitter user, William Lucas, managed to grab footage of what is likely the twister as it passed over the lake:

Environment Canada says there were several other areas in the vicinity that had suffered severe storm damage.

Several downed tree branches were found in an area from Sunderland to Lindsay, where a Canadian Tire was damaged. There was evidence of straight line wind damage, with wind speeds ranging from 70-85 km/h, with isolated gusts topping 90 km/h.

Further east, strong storms prompted severe warnings in the Ottawa area, and Ottawa Hydro at one point reported more than 10,000 people without power in the city.

This is Ontario's second confirmed tornado of 2016. The first, an EF-1 twister that touched down in Minto in March, uprooted several trees and damaged a barn and grain bins. Environment Canada said at the time it was the earliest confirmed tornado on record in Ontario.

The province sees 11-13 tornadoes annually, based on a 30-year average. Eight were confirmed in 2015.
