Buffalo snow: By the numbers

Tuesday, November 18, 2014, 2:25 PM - A major snowstorm slammed New York state Tuesday, burying the Buffalo area in nearly a metre of snow. Here's a numerical breakdown of the wintry weather, along with some sights and sounds of what it looked like just across the U.S.-Canadian border.

4,000 (tonnes): Buffalo city officials have 4,000 tonnes of salt on hand to battle the storm, along with another 7,000 tonnes in reserve.

694: The number of tweets sent out between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. Tuesday using the hashtag #BuffaloSnow, according to hashtags.org. (As an aside, @theweathernetwork was trending for an hour in the U.S. We are everywhere.)

168 (km): Officials were forced to close a 168 km stretch of Interstate 90 in both directions early Tuesday due to whiteout conditions. Other major highways in the areas were closed as well. Elsewhere in the city, driving bans have been imposed.

100 (cm): The amount of snow recorded in Lancaster, New York by 9 a.m. ET Tuesday due to lake effect snow. Nearby areas not impacted by lake effect snow -- like downtown and north Buffalo -- only saw a few centimetres accumulate by that time.

60: The number of flights that had been cancelled as of 11:45 a.m. Tuesday morning in Buffalo. According to USA Today, that represents about a third of the city's flight schedule. Dozens of flights have been cancelled in other states as well.

75: The number of snow-fighting vehicles in Buffalo's fleet.

74 (Interstate): Other parts of the U.S. have been battling with intense snow as well. An icy section of Interstate 74 triggered a chain-reaction car crash involving more than a dozen vehicles near Indianapolis Tuesday, closing the highway for a few hours.

10 (cm): According to the U.S. National Weather Service, the storm was dumping up to 10 cm of snow per hour on some communities.

2 (metres): The U.S. National Weather Service has issued a lake effect warning for western portions of New York, saying that some areas could see up to two metres of snow accumulate by Thursday.

1 (day): Lake-effect storms are expected to persist in western New York and east of Lake Ontario until Wednesday.
