Saturday, February 9, 2019, 3:44 PM - Much of Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland have seen particularly wintry conditions recently, and ended off the week with powerful winds gusting from 60-80+ km/h and significant snowfall accumulations.
Bitter arctic outflow winds combined with a powerful low pressure system to not only create freezing temperatures, but extremely windy conditions that were powerful enough to knock down large trees and power lines, disrupt the ferry schedule, and resulted in over 65,000 without power, according to BC Hydro on Saturday afternoon.
BC Hydro is asking customers for patience as they respond to numerous power outages across Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland, and many are feeling frustrated with the windy challenges B.C. has faced this winter. This storm occurred less than two months after the disastrous wind storm on December 20, 2018, which left 750,000 BC Hydro customers without power, with many left without electricity for multiple days.
In addition to power outages lingering into Saturday, marinas are struggling to recover from the impacts of the wind gusts. A marina in Horseshoe Bay a barge partially sunk (see below) after being blown over from the wind gusts, and other boats are shown flipped over in the harbour as well.
