Experts say the two birds were likely involved in a territorial battle prior to crashing into the street.

"I saw two eagles fighting in the sky and they just dropped right into the drain, so I immediately pulled over," witness Edward Bickerstaff told WFTV.

It wasn't long before the pair attracted a large audience. Parts of Curry Ford Road near Goldenrod Road were shut down in Orange County, according to the news station.

The bald eagles were stuck for about 90 minutes. One of the birds flew away around 6 p.m. local time and almost immediately after the second eagle, believed to be a 5-year-old female, disappeared into the storm drain.

Emergency crews managed to extract the bird about 20 minutes later. She suffered from chest and leg punctures, and her beak was also cracked. After covering the injured eagle in a blanket, rescuers handed her to staff from Florida's Audubon Center for Birds of Prey.

The medical team at the centre will continue to care for the bird. It will likely take several weeks for her to recover before she is released back into the wild, WFTV reports.
