(Visit our Complete Guide to Fall 2018 for an in depth look at the Fall Forecast, tips to plan for it and a sneak peek at winter)

WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Wind warnings issued for parts of the Maritimes and Newfoundland as fall storm moves through Friday night and Saturday
  • Autumnal Sunday and through early next week with widespread frost threat
  • Windy, warmer, wet as next storm tracks into northern Quebec by mid next week

WIND

Just as we get ready to pack away the bathing suits and summer sandals, right on cue, a potent fall storm kicks off the new season right on time. As the intense and early fall storm crosses central Quebec and Labrador on Saturday, rain and strong winds threaten parts of the Maritimes and Newfoundland. Winds are expected to remain below warning criteria for most of Nova Scotia, but gusts may reach 70 to 80 km/h, especially along the coast.

"A wind warning is in effect for the Tantramar Marsh area where southwesterly winds are expected to gust up to 90 km/h overnight into early Saturday morning," says Environment Canada in a special weather statement issued Friday morning.

Wind warnings also stretch over Moncton, New Brunswick as well as western and northern Newfoundland with gusts expected to reach near 100 km/h.

"Over the remainder of the island, wind gusts are forecast to reach up to 80 km/h, but there is the potential for these gusts to be higher, especially over exposed areas," warns EC. "As these winds will be much stronger than those experienced during the recent summer months, loose or lighter yard, garden or patio objects that are not secured could be blown over or tossed around."

RAIN

Rain associated with this system will develop after midnight over western Newfoundland, spreading throughout the island through the overnight hours.

"The rain will be heavy at times over western and southern regions with total rainfall amounts between 25 and 40 mm expected over southwestern Newfoundland by Saturday afternoon," adds EC.
