5 arrests made after climate change activisits block airport

Friday, November 27, 2015, 2:29 PM - Climate change activists opposed of a third runway at London's Heathrow Airport protested Thursday morning, blocking the tunnel leading to major terminals.

Members from the group Plane Stupid carried out the demonstration, locking themselves to a vehicle that was parked across the lanes of the main road into Heathrow.

Plane Stupid believes the airport's plan to expand would "wreck" the Climate Change Act and would displace 75 million people by 2035, according to the group's spokesperson Cameron Kayne.

"If aviation growth isn't reduced, by 2037 aviation alone could emit all of the carbon it's safe for the UK to emit. The government needs to choose: build new runways or stop climate chaos: it's that simple," he said on Plane Stupid's blog. "There is already airport capacity for families taking their yearly holiday. New runways only benefit the 15 per cent of flyers who take 70 per cent of our flights, cooking our planet. These are rich frequent leisure flyers."

Police were called to the scene around 7:40 a.m. and five arrests were made.

The protests caused delays to terminals 2 and 3 and airport officials were advising passengers on Twitter to leave extra time due to the demonstration. Photos on social media showed people opting to walk with their luggage through the tunnel instead of driving.

Three people have been charged with unlawfully blocking a tunnel at Heathrow Airport, contrary to the Heathrow Bylaws, according to Metropolitan Police.

Plane Stupid protested at the airport in July, shutting down a runway and delaying numerous flights.

Here's what passengers and members of Plane Stupid posted on social media.
