Windy, stormy weather knocks out power for hundreds of thousands in Quebec
Many Quebecers are waking up in the dark on Tuesday with power outages affecting several areas, as high winds continue to sweep across the province.
In the Greater Montreal area, several Lester B. Pearson School Board schools are closed due to those outages including:
Soulanges Elementary School.
Pierrefonds Community High School.
West Island Career Centre.
As of 7 a.m., there were more than 200,000 homes without power, with numbers climbing throughout the morning.
The Montérégie region is being hit the hardest with more than 50,000 homes affected, followed by Montreal, the Laurentians and Lanaudière.
The outages are being caused by high winds, with several areas under Environment Canada yellow wind warnings, including the Eastern Townships and Quebec City regions.
In affected areas, the agency is warning of wind gusts of up to 90 kilometres per hour.
"These winds cause power outages," the agency warned, and can also lead to difficult driving conditions, with winds expected to die down later Tuesday.
