Evacuation order lifted after train derailment in Alberta
The derailment was reported Friday afternoon
Evacuation orders have been lifted for the residents of Cypress County after a train derailment in southern Alberta brought the risk for 'chemical exposure' Friday evening.
The derailment happened on the west side of the hamlet of Irvine, along the north side of Highway 1 in Cypress County, according to Alberta Emergency Alert, which issued a critical alert at 4:52 p.m. Friday.
The derailment involved damage along the railway line, chemical exposure, and disruption of road and highway access, according to Alberta Emergency Alert. The alert was later rescinded.
Evacuations were ordered within a seven kilometre radius of the site, and Cypress County declared a state of local emergency as a result of the derailment. The evacuation order was lifted around 11 p.m. Friday night, according to Canadian Pacific, which released a statement saying two of the derailed cars were leaking styrene "at a minimal rate from their top valves."
Highway 1 has also been reopened.
