Tornado and downbursts confirmed as severe weather hits Ontario

Ontario has experienced an active period of severe weather in June, with the Northern Tornadoes Project confirming three EF0 wind events, including a tornado in Croton and two downbursts in Walpole Island and Blenheim

Ontario has seen an active period of severe weather this month, featuring multiple rounds of thunderstorms and tornado warnings.

The Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) has confirmed three damaging wind events from early morning storms on June 12 across southwestern Ontario.

In Croton, Ontario, an EF0 tornado was confirmed. The storm caused damage to a farm outbuilding, brought down numerous trees and large branches, and left a visible vortex path across cornfields.

Damage assessed an estimated maximum wind speed of 130 km/h, and track length of 4.80 km and path width of 150 m.

On the same day, Walpole Island experienced an EF0 downburst, with maximum wind speeds of 130 km/h. The event resulted in damage to a communication tower, shingles torn from commercial buildings, and fallen trees and large branches.

Blenheim was also affected by an EF0 downburst on June 12. This storm caused similar damage, with shingles blown off houses and several trees and large branches brought down.

Tornado warnings were issued for parts of northwestern Ontario on June 10 and southwestern Ontario on June 14. While no significant damage from these events has been reported, investigations are ongoing, according to officials at NTP.
