Most of the deaths occurred in Indonesia, where more than 170,000 people perished as a result of the tsunami and earthquake
Boxing Day marks the 15-year anniversary of the massive earthquake and tsunami that devastated several countries in the Pacific Ocean including Indonesia, where a sombre vigil was held to observe the tragedy.
The Dec. 26, 2004, tsunami was set off by a 9.1-magnitude earthquake that struck off Sumatra island. It killed about 230,000 people across a dozen countries as far away as East Africa. Indonesia's Aceh province was the first and hardest to be hit.
More than 170,000 of the deaths occurred in Indonesia alone, representing about three-quarters of the total death toll.
